Kerri Chandler, New Jersey, USA.
May 1997 Interview!!
Kerri Chandler, hails from
the small community of East Orange, New Jersey, USA.!
At the age of 27 years old, Kerri started playing and messing
around behind decks since he was 9 years old. He went onto producing
tracks when he reached the mature old age of 15. His neighbourhood
allowed him build good relationships which for many of us would
seem like a dream come true just to meet them. Producers such
as Kenny Carpenter, David Camacho, Tony Humphries and Michael
Watford
Due to his unique yet successful. Sound his work load
has become enormous, having spent time remixing for labels such
as East and West, RCA, BMG, Movin, King Street, Nite Grooves,
Strictly Rhythm, Warner Brothers, Madhouse, etc

And yet despite all of his work that he has done in collaboration
with the major labels, he has keep a loving arm around the "Underground"
, as he sees it as he main inspiration in continuing to do this
style of music. It is his policy to pick projects with the utmost
scrutiny, never compromising his ideal of what it is he feels
his work should convey.
How else could one explain his decision to remix"
Strike it Up", bt Black Box, but rejecting projects from
ARTISTS such as Enigma and Michael Jackson!!!!
Kerri's purist vision stems we find from his father who
was a big Disco DJ in his hey day, taking Kerri to all the major
clubs in Town. It wasn't too long before he was to become a resident
within clubs in New Jersey, via the skills that he had picked
up
"I learned from him about mixing. While I was resident
at America in New Jersey, I'd play stuff I'd put together.
Then I had this Indie label, Express Records, I put some
of them out for the other DJ's to play, they did so on Radio,
and then "bang", all the majors picked up all of the
tracks. Then the other labels began to habe interest in me."
Although major labels broke Kerri, the bulk of his work
has been for the underground Indie labels with most of his highly
recognized works being the material on the Champion Records Label,
as well as his own Madhouse imprint; the famous "I got
that feeling," by Dreamer G as well as, "I need you,"
by Kamar, Grandpa's "I love you" (featuring his own
Grandpa), the Compilation "A Basement, A Red Light, and a
Feeling", "Stompin Grounds" "Your my Inspiration"
(with Arnold Jarvis) and most recently "Hooked on love and
Hallelujah" on King Street Records, USA.
Having completed so much work for so many, mainly independents,
would Kerri return to major labels again? "I enjoy working
with Indies", replies Kerri. "Majors are more concerned
with Sales. My sound is Jazz based, dark influence from a street
level, which is where I'm coming from, so I believe in the underground".

Kerri latest project is with King Street Records.
Its a full length mix album called, "KAOZ on King Street",
is slated for an early May release. The album wasn't a planned
thing. "It started as an EP, and things just progressed
from there"
When asked about his relationship with King Street Records
in which he has done so much work within the late 5 years, he
replies, "King Street is like my family. Hisa Ishioka
(label owner) has allowed me to take my craft in the direction
I felt like taking it. As opposed to most labels which are mainly
interested in me recreating something I've done in the past".
Asked about King Street's role in the underground scene,
he answers without hesitation, "If it wasn't for King
Street, House music would be half Dead. The quality of the records
they've put out has played a big part in sustaining the life of
dance music".

When asked what is the one thing he's always wanted to
do, but hasn't, his answer his reply is a bit surprising, "Actually,
I'm doing it now and it should be done by this weekend."
Kerri's lifelong ambition of working alongside the immortal
Roy Ayers has come true. There are a couple of others in that
league that Kerri would like to work with, but for the most part,
part Kerri Chandler has seen his wildest dreams materialize into
reality. So when one reaches that professional apex, what's next?
"I'm going to get back into Dj'ing a bit more,
like in the old days. And eventually, I'll retire from production
and concentrate on developing other artists on the Madhouse label.
Like Hisa."

Kerri's newiest release is a 15 track album set, called "KAOZ ON KING Street",
is a must for his fans. Its chocked full of goodies such as "Keep Me Inside, Come Home
and the classic "Halleljuh" from the
Trionosphere 2 Ep alongside 5 spanking brand new tracks, all mixed by Kerri himself.
The album is due for release during late April/early May 1997.
Please purchase on King Sreet Records, USA......
