A Right Royal Honour

Caravan Duo Made Paul Harris Fellows

Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Yugoslavia were the guests of honour at the Aegean Evening held at Sam Alper's Chilford Hall on May2nd by the Rotary Club of Cambridge. A gathering of 250 Rotarians and Friends came from all over the country to celebrate the successful first phase of the Cambridge Rotary project to ship caravans out to house the earthquake victims in Greece and Turkey.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge has organised 85 Rotary Clubs to find nearly 200 second hand caravans and tow them to the docks at Newcastle or Southampton just in time for shipment. The charity "UFELINE", with Crown Princess Katherine as its patron, then organised free shipment thanks to Mitsui OSK Shipping.

Other distinguished guests included Mrs. Lale Ukler, counsellor at the Turkish Embassy, representatives of Lifeline, Mitsui OSK Shipping and Inchcape Shipping Services, and RIBI International Chairman Jeremy Voizey.

Edward Thackray, President of the Rotary Club of Cambridge said, "It was a wonderful evening - Princess Katherine gave a very moving speech about the plight of the earthquake victims which she has seen for herself, and then presented Paul Harris Fellowships to Sam Alper and Victor Bugg who were the driving forces behind the project. Mrs. Ukler also made presentations and brought the sincere thanks of the people of Turkey".

District Governor Barry Catchpole was also present, and was thanked for his enthusiastic support and advice, which helped to get the project going nationally and in District 1080.
