Proposed School Closure - How sustainable is that?

"The council has to consider the environmental impact of closing so many village schools!  Closing just one rural school alone could result in an extra 250,000 miles of travel every year.

Herefordshire already has a carbon footprint which is above the national average.  This proposal will NOT reduce our footprint.

The effect on the social network of our villages will be deeply felt and has to be considered in the wider context of the important contribution that schools make to village life.  They are often the heart of our rural communities.

The council says it supports sustainable communities yet we have lost our village shops, our post offices and now we could lose our schools.  Is this the end of village life?"

The above letter was written by Vanessa Hembling and appeared recently in the Hereford Times publication along with many other concerned Herefordshire residents.  If  you also feel strongly about this issue, please check out the Downing Street website.  There are currently 10 petitions against School Closings.  Please sign these petitions.  It is also possible to set up a New Petition by following this link.

Petition on Climate Change Bill
In December 2007, a petition on the Climate Change Bill was submitted to Paul Keetch with copies to the Shadow Environment Ministers in the other parties.  We requested they lobby for Climate Change targets to avoid the worst impacts of global warming.  Here is a recap of our representatives' responses.  Just click on this link  Feedback on GVEG Climate Change Petition
