A Clubhouse is a day facility for adults whose lives are affected by the experience of severe or enduring mental ill-health, working to a framework defined by the International Clubhouse Standards.
A Clubhouse aims to assist people in the process of re-building their lives by offering an environment in which to regain confidence, self-esteem and a sense of purpose and belonging.
The everyday running of a Clubhouse is the shared responsibility of members and staff, who work together in a true partnership on the Work Ordered Day.
Members participate in all the aspects of Clubhouse activities including decision-making, planning/policy meetings and sit on the staff interview and election panels.Having gained confidence from working within the Clubhouse, members may also take the opportunity of the work placement scheme, known as the Transitional Employment Programme. This enables members to reintroduce themselves to paid employment in a highly supported environment; the support coming from both staff and members.
The Clubhouse model sets itself apart from most other Day Services by implementing a framework that encourages autonomy rather than perpetuating dependency. Nor does the model lay an emphasis on illness, but concentrates on each person's strengths and abilities.
