Dangerous People

A Picture of a Photographer

'Dangerous People' is a photographic exhibition produced by members of the Clubhouse. It has been shown at a number of venues including The Focal Point Gallery in Southend, Norwich Arts Centre and Ipswich Tourist Information Office. It has also been used during health promotion events. The exhibition is in three parts;

1) A series of large colour portraits of club members with text.

2) A series of black and white photographs taken at St. Audrey's Hospital; a large Victorian Psychiatric Hospital now closed as part of the Government's 'Care in the Community' programme.

3) A series of black and white reportage type photographs taken in the streets accompanied by mental health statistics.

The exhibition aims to challenge some of the myths related to mental illness e.g. that anyone with a mental illness is to be feared. It presents a number of statistics which show that mental health problems affect a large proportion of the public irrespective of age or gender. The exhibition adds fuel to the debate regarding the care of the mentally ill in society. A second project is currently in progress.
