Carrantuohill

Macgillycuddy's Reeks, cover an area of approximately twenty five square miles, it contains the highest mountain peaks in all Ireland. This area is one of the most unspoilt last wildernessess in Europe very few people will be encountered while exploring the relatively unknown mountain’s. However Carrantuohill 3414 feet Ireland’s highest mountain is very popular and a good place to start if you are new to hillwalking , this is easily climbed via the tourist route. A stroll through Hags Glen - then a long hard slog up the Devil's Ladder, be careful here - apparently there have been a few accidents in recent years. When you have reached the saddle 2400ft you can take some time to recover. If the weather is good follow the cairns to the summit - which is marked by a large metal cross. On a good day the view is tremendous on a misty day the feeling of achievement is overwhelming. The whole of Kerry can be seen before you. The more adventurous may now want to explore the ridge to Beenkeragh 3314 feet Ireland’s second highest mountain. The ridge looks more difficult than it really is - but take care there is a long way to fall! An easier option is to follow the other ridge to Caher 3200 feet a truly spectacular walk and not difficult - but again take care.
